What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is a web address such as example.com. It consists of two parts; a top level domain (such as .com, .net, .org, etc.) and a second level domain (the label to the left of the dot, in this case "example"). Domain names are linked to one or more IP addresses, these are the servers that the domain name represents. Domain names are used in URLs(Uniform Resource Locator) to identify particular Web pages on those servers.
